As any significant awards ceremony nears, there’s always a demand for the addition additional classifications to honor unsung work and fill the spirits of fans with niche passions.
Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition completely during that awards season
- Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment that year
- Just some puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
