Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system triggered widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and residences washed out by strong flows.

Our team rescued 14 individuals stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and another killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended recently over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Scientists report that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in damage to the country annually.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency on Thursday because of the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
